The Caledonian tutoring system is designed to help students become more responsible for and more effective managers of their own thinking and learning. "When collaboration ends, the student's liberation begins."

Students need to be actively engaged in the learning process. Passively watching a tutor solve a problem, or listening to a tutor's explanation of how to proceed with a computer command, will not help tutees in the long run. For learning to be meaningful and long-lasting, student participation is essential.

Meaningfulness is best constructed through the learner's own actions. Our Tutors guide students in helping them work independently, e.g. solving their own problems and in revising their exercises.

Our tutors cultivate attitudes that enable students to use the knowledge and skills they are acquiring, week by week. They also help them develop emotionally, so they are likely to persist even when confronted with difficulty, frustration, or boredom. Caledonian tutors help students feel a sense of control and responsibility over their own learning.

This program is available to Federal Employees under DOL workers compensation programs, for the US Veteran under chapter 31, and for California State Workers Comp (SJDB).
